There may come a point in our lives when everything we once worked towards no longer brings the same fulfilment.
The career may still be progressing. The relationship may look fine to everyone else. We may have achieved something we once prayed for. Yet inwardly, there is restlessness, emptiness or an increasing awareness that the life we have created does not fully reflect who we are or what we truly desire.
It is often through this inner disconnect that questions about spiritual awakening begin to arise. Many of us associate awakening with enlightenment, bliss, or suddenly having all the answers, when the process often begins by subtle shifts in how we see ourselves, other people and life itself.
Spiritual awakening is a gradual expansion of consciousness. As our awareness grows, we begin questioning beliefs, identities & expectations that we previously accepted without much thought. We seek. We grieve. We heal. We discover parts of ourselves that were buried beneath conditioning, fear or the need for approval.
Every soul experiences this differently, so these stages are not a series of steps or levels to compare ourselves against. They may overlap, repeat or unfold differently throughout our spiritual journey.
Spiritual Awakening and Enlightenment: Are They the Same?
Spiritual awakening is not the same as enlightenment. Awakening marks the beginning of a deeper expansion of consciousness.
At the soul level, awakening means becoming conscious of a reality beyond what we have learned to perceive through our five physical senses, social conditioning & accumulated beliefs. We begin to see that some of what we accepted as truth may have been inherited from our family, culture, education, religion or previous experiences and are in fact, mired in falsehoods.
This can be liberating, but also deeply challenging. As our consciousness expands, beliefs and ways of living that once gave us certainty may no longer feel true. In that uncertainty, we may feel lost and confused, want answers quickly or try to accelerate what is happening.
Spiritual awakening, however, unfolds according to each soul’s own journey & readiness. With proper guidance through an Akashic Records session, your spiritual awakening process can unfold with most divine ease & grace, by presenting you with clarity the immediate issues for your healing & resolution, as well as workable solutions to deepen & complete the healing. The pace at which you work through these issues will then depend on your efforts and commitment.
There is no single universal sequence for awakening. Some teachings describe five stages of spiritual awakening, others 12, because the journey can be understood in different ways.
The Six Common Stages of a Spiritual Awakening

I see spiritual awakening unfolding through six broad phases: disruption, losing of the old identity, the Dark Night of the Soul, spiritual seeking, expanded consciousness, and integrating that awareness into our everyday lives. Spiritual awakening does not unfold in a linear path; at different phases of our life, we may restart this process at a deeper degree or repeat certain stages.
Stage 1: When Old Ways of Living Stop Making Sense
Awakening often begins long before we realise that anything spiritual is happening.
We simply know that something is no longer right.
There may be emptiness despite outward success, frustration with work, grief after a relationship ends, a health challenge or an increasing sense that there must be something beyond the life we have been living.
Sometimes, nothing dramatic has happened at all. We simply achieve what we once wanted and discover that the fulfilment we expected is not there.
This can bring important questions to the surface:
Why am I actually here? What is my purpose on Earth?
Whose definition of success have I been living by?
Why do I have everything I thought I wanted, yet still feel disconnected from myself?
At the soul level, this discomfort can mark the beginning of a greater awakening. Our consciousness is expanding enough to see that the old answers are no longer sufficient.
Stage 2: When the Old Identity Begins to Fall Away
Once we begin questioning, we may realise how much of our identity was created through the conditioning that we inherited from others.
In this lifetime, this can often be traced back to what we have taken on since childhood. Perhaps we worked so hard to become the successful person we are today, because we desire to (and believe that by doing so, we will) be loved and accepted by others. Perhaps success was the security blanket that we were seeking for, to alleviate our fears and scarcity mindset around money, which were issues we have taken on from our ancestral lineages, past and present lives. Perhaps we often kept everyone happy, because conflict felt unsafe, and we learned from young that our voice and presence did not matter. Perhaps we were so caught up in our hectic lives that we have not paused to consider where our beliefs came from, or were even truly ours to begin with.
The ego, which is a part of our lower personality, naturally resists this process. It wants certainty, familiarity & belonging.
Yet awakening brings us closer to the truth of who we are, beyond the roles we have learned to perform and the masks we have learned to wear. The more conscious we become, the harder it is to continue living entirely through amnesia, fear, obligation or other people’s expectations.
This can create an uncomfortable choice: continue living in the familiar way, or have the courage to explore what feels true within us.
Stage 3: The Dark Night of the Soul
For some of us, spiritual awakening enters a painful and often protracted phase commonly known as the “Dark Night of the Soul”.
We can feel completely shaken up, lost, disconnected, exhausted and empty as old identities, beliefs & coping mechanisms fall away. The life we knew no longer feels right, yet the new way forward has not fully revealed itself.
I have personally experienced the Dark Night of the Soul for more than two years, before I eventually found my way out. The experience brought me to a rock bottom phase of my life, filled with recurring episodes of painful inflammation from my autoimmune disease, heartbreak wounds, and a complete loss of my old identity. At one point, I was crying myself to sleep almost every night. Eventually, it also guided me towards deeper soul-searching, a personal relationship with the Divine, and my mission to serve through the Akashic Records. As much as I hope nobody else ever has to go through this experience, it was the baptism of fire that allowed me to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. I was completely reborn from this soul-wrenching experience.
The Dark Night is not punishment from the Divine. It can bring deep awareness into our fears, wounds, limiting beliefs & suppressed emotions that we can no longer avoid and have to face them directly, if we want to break free from the past shackles.

Stage 4: The Search Begins
After rounds of questioning, we often develop a strong desire for a deeper meaning in life.
We may find ourselves drawn to meditation, yoga, sound healing, prayer, energy healing, intuitive development, tarot cards, astrology, Chinese metaphysics, crystals or spiritual books and practices we previously knew little about. Conversations seem different because we are listening differently. Ideas we once dismissed may now feel possible. We become less attached to our old identity and beliefs, and therefore, less resistant to the new possibilities out there.
This stage can feel exciting, but the sheer amount of new information can also feel overwhelming. When so many teachings, practices & perspectives open up at once, we may naturally look for someone who can make sense of it all for us.
A spiritual guide that serves with integrity can support us through this process. They can guide us to develop & trust our intuition, open our hearts & minds to the unseen world, and deepen our relationship with the Divine.
In my own path, meditation and the Akashic Records are instrumental in my spiritual journey, to forge a profound connection with the Divine and cultivate my strong motivation to be of Divine service.
Stage 5: The First Glimpses of Something New
As we continue healing and questioning, we begin experiencing life from an upgraded perspective.
Peace becomes easier to access and maintain. Our intuition sharpens and strengthens. We develop a stronger inner knowing & feeling of what aligns with us, even when the logical mind cannot immediately explain why.
We also begin to see that we are not merely our fears, past experiences, emotions or the identity we previously defended so strongly. We have awakened a greater consciousness within us.
As a result, certain relationships, habits or ambitions may naturally lose their attraction and fall away. We become more comfortable in our own silence and presence. We start attracting different people into our lives. We maintain a daily practice that brings us peace, which may include meditation, journalling, taking up spiritual courses and practising what we learned. We may enjoy our travels differently, as we become more sensitive and attuned to the energies all around us.
At some point, spiritual awareness also requires faith in action.
Faith becomes practical when we begin acting on what we have received within, even when the logical mind cannot give us every answer, and we cannot see a definite end goal or success in sight.
Stage 6: Healing, Integration and Living Differently
Awareness alone does not complete the spiritual work. We need to integrate and embody what we have learned.
Healing may involve releasing grief, working through trauma, changing how we relate to or communicate with other people, setting boundaries, dismantling limiting beliefs or taking responsibility for choices we previously made unconsciously.
Our spiritual practices also become an integral part of how we live. Meditation, prayer, journaling, creativity, movement or connecting with the Divine are no longer occasional escapes when life becomes difficult. They support us to maintain an ongoing relationship with ourselves & the Divine.
As we heal, Divine service may also become increasingly important. We begin asking not only, What do I want from life? but also, How can I use what I have learned, experienced and received to contribute?
For me, this eventually led to my work in the Akashic Records, sharing the wisdom through readings, meditation, podcasts and daily inspirational & thought-provoking contents on my social media platforms. It gives me great fulfillment to witness my clients stepping into their power and leading better lives.
There Is No Final Stage: Why Spiritual Awakening Never Truly Ends
We may search for the final stages of spiritual awakening or the highest stages of spiritual ascension because we naturally want to know when we have finally “made it”.
I do not see spiritual awakening as a ladder with a permanent final rung.
Spiritual growth is a lifelong process. It continues to reveal new and deeper aspects of ourselves. We may experience great clarity in one season and later discover another layer of fear, attachment or belief ready for deeper healing. The same lesson may return at a different level or degree, giving us the opportunity to respond with greater wisdom than we did previously. Suffice to know, once you commit to this beautiful journey of deep introspection, the process of unravelling, healing and working through these issues will become easier and more intuitive over time. Your relationship with your own healing will also evolve.
Spiritual growth does not remove us from the world’s problems. However, it changes how we live our lives, our daily choices and decisions.
If your awakening brings forward experiences that seem connected to another lifetime, a past life reading may explore that soul history as needed for your highest good. For those seeking Akashic healing in Singapore, my work in the Akashic Records focuses on tracing root causes, identifying recurring soul lessons and receiving higher perspectives on what you are presently experiencing. Importantly, sharing workable solutions that you can adopt, to deepen and complete the healing after the session.
While the Divine can guide us, ultimately our spiritual awakening journey is our own journey towards self-mastery. At all times, our free will is respected. We can choose to proactively participate in our spiritual awakening journey and allow an accelerated process filled with divine ease & grace, or we may choose a path of continued pain & suffering. If you desire higher guidance on how to progress in your spiritual awakening journey, let’s work together through an Akashic Records session. For step-by-step guidance to anchor sustainable shifts in your life, a Mentoring program with me will be very beneficial.
